Abstract
The paper addresses the issue of using exponential mathematical models of tool durability when
choosing drilling conditions. Characteristic lines and characteristic surfaces are used in setting
drilling conditions for various diameter drills from quick-cutting steel and for various machined
materials.
To optimize drilling conditions in terms of minimum expenses it is proposed to consider power
consumption costs. A correction coefficient of an average-applied torque increase by 1.2-1.3 times
is accepted when calculating power consumption for various cutting modes taking into account an
increase in the torque in the process of tool wear. In terms of energy consumption the coordinate of
the optimum cutting mode is displaced along the characteristic line towards higher performance in
the two-factor field of machining conditions.
