THE APPROACH TO THE CONTROL OF THE DRILLING PROCESS BASED

ON THE CONVEX TOOL LIFE MODEL

Abstract

A method of calculating of the two-channel automatic control systems for metal-cutting

equipment are proposed in this paper. Most research in this area are based on the traditional model

of resistance of the cutting tool, the pre-emptive power form. The authors propose a convex

exponential tool life model with one extremum, and based on this model, the method of calculating

the optimum cutting conditions. The method of characteristic lines and characteristic surfaces are

used in developing this approach. For the selected optimality criterion the characteristic line, on

which are the optimal cutting parameters, is found. The specific value of the mode is determined by

economic data belonging to the optimality criterion.

In this paper it is proposed to apply the developed methodology to the design of machine tools

with numerical control and automatic control systems. It is proposed to apply the control for torque

stabilization. Examples of analytical problem solution of the optimal control in the case of simple

models of depending of the torque from the modes and processing time. An example of the

synthesis of controller for dual channel control is provided. The evaluation of the economic effect

from the introduction of the developed technique is spent.

The proposed method was investigated on life tests of the drilling process data, but can be used

for other processing operations, such as whetting or milling, with the necessary adjustments.
